Introducing TMix+—Launching a new community of cooks

What a whirlwind few months it’s been for the Slattery Media Group team. After many years of planning—including countless meetings, lost nights spent critiquing and debating every minute detail, recipe testing, more recipe testing, even more recipe testing, as well as the blood (metaphorical, we think), sweat (real) and tears (…also real) that each team member will only willingly contribute towards the common goal of bringing those special few projects to life—we have proudly launched TMix+.

What’s TMix+, you ask? TMix+ is the first magazine created for users of the Thermomix in Australia. It connects the Thermomix community—a passionate group of people who love to cook with, talk about and engage with their Thermomix on a daily basis—through warm, honest and inspiring content.

Published quarterly, it is a collectible product that has equal pride of place on bookshelves and kitchen benches. TMix+ encapsulates the Thermomix spirit: excellent quality, inspiring, loyal, progressive and passionate. It is not about providing ‘cheffy’ recipes: our goal is to create recipes that will become part of the repertoire of everyday cooks, while maximising the brilliance of the Thermomix.

There’s a lot more to TMix+ than just a selection of recipes—we have created a fully-rounded magazine for our readers. In addition to 40+, rigorously tested, recipes, each issue will include conversations with chefs and cooks, essays on ingredients tracing their long history (or short), great photos shot exclusively for TMix+, and will encourage ongoing dialogue between members of the TMix+ community.

TMix+ issue 1 and issue 2, retailing for $19.95 each, are available now from newsagents and bookstores across Australia, or can be purchased online at tmixplus.com—a companion website that will rarely sleep. Subscriptions can also be purchased at the low cost of $59.85 (incl. postage and handling; RRP for four individual issues $79.80). Our subscribers receive four editions, home delivered anywhere in Australia at a discount of 25%, plus a regular newsletter, and full access to our online recipe archive. Subscribers are also eligible to participate in exclusive rewards programs as well as regular competitions and giveaways.

Fox Swift and the Golden Boot book launch

The Slattery Media Group was thrilled to launch the third book in our Fox Swift series, Fox Swift and the Golden Boot, on Sunday afternoon at Readings in Hawthorn. Author David Lawrence, illustrator Jo Gill, and, of course, Hawks superstar Cyril Rioli joined us. It was a joy to see so many young readers lining up eagerly with their books. We at SMG are extremely proud of this series— not only do David and Jo have readers cackling from start to finish with their witty words and illustrations, but all three books tackle some serious issues including racial intolerance, bullying, cheating and bad sportsmanship, and it was lovely to see how deeply these messages have resonated with Fox Swift fans while talking to the many who could make it to the launch on the weekend.

A very big thank you to our team of contributors, David, Jo and Cyril, and to the staff at Readings Hawthorn for their stellar assistance in making this event a raging success.

If you haven’t got your copy of the book yet and are wondering what Fox is up to this year, we see him visiting the Tiwi Islands with his best mate Lewis Rioli, playing a thrilling game with the locals, almost being trampled by a water buffalo, and having a close encounter with an extremely hungry crocodile!

Fox’s younger brother Chase is made captain of the Davinal Under 11’s, and, with the brilliant Jimmy Rioli, a giant burping ruckman, and a highflying one-armed centre half back, they are set for a fantastic year. But one obstacle stands in their way: the completely incompetent Mr Percy has volunteered to be their coach!

Midway through the season, Fox faces an unexpected test – he’s forced to team up with his nemesis Mace after a slick Metro side challenges their local country league to a match. Can these longtime rivals put their differences aside long enough to triumph over the city slickers?

All of your favourite characters from the first two books return, and the Diggers have a new recruit – a speedy half back flanker called Aslam Khan.

With Cyril Rioli’s tips and drills once again featured, a wonderfully wacky storyline and witty illustrations, there is a lot of fun to be had over the journey – making it the perfect book for any child with a passion for Aussie Rules, or just a passion for a good read.

A History of the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards

Since 1984 the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Awards have recognised and celebrated many of Australia’s greatest artists, arts organisations and facilitators. Our task was to present these wonderful performers in a book that celebrated their achievements. The result not only chronicled their work, but also presented the finished product as a companion to the annual trophy presented, by a sleight of hand engineered by our graphics department. 

Thank you to the incomparable Michael Shmith, who presented these great achievers in such beautiful, eloquent words. 

 

Harder Than Football

We’re honoured to have recently worked with the AFL to produce the title, Harder Than Football. The book chronicles the almost 2500 men who have played VFL/AFL football and have also performed military service for Australian and Allied Forces. Publishing to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, Harder Than Football offers stories of unfaltering courage, mateship and strength of character—the same values that are so apparent in our national game of football. We were lucky enough to work with Barbara Cullen, who has worked tirelessly over six years to create a database of every footy player to have ever served for our country. Barbara has a long history of commitment to AFL affiliated groups and clubs. She is currently curator at the Sydney Swans Football Club and North Melbourne Football Club, and was previously curator for the Essendon Football Club Hall of Fame. Harder Than Football is her first book, and has been a labour of love for close to a decade—we’re thrilled to have helped Barbara in bringing her vision for this project to life.

This book chronicles men who have served in the Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, as well as those who have performed National Service. Players are representative of our community; they have ranged from labourers and clerks to teachers to surgeons and barristers, they have been ranked from Privates to Major Generals and everything in between. Most importantly they were loved sons, husbands, fathers, brothers and even grandparents whose service had a lasting effect upon their families. With a foreword by the great Kevin Sheedy, Harder Than Football serves as a reminder of the history of our country at war, and the contribution made by those who played our game.

Playing to Win book launch

The Hawthorn Football Club and The Slattery Media Group proudly launched Michael Gordon’s new book, Playing to Win, on Wednesday at the Ricoh Centre.

Playing to Win is an insider’s view of the inner workings of Hawthorn, with Gordon present for the private meetings at all the key moments of the club, flag to flag! Having experienced the highs and lows of this journey, Gordon’s account offers extraordinary insights into the pressures and realities of elite professional sport. Although Playing to Win is a story about Hawthorn’s 11th premiership, the author also describes it as ‘a story about the evolving culture of what may well be Australia’s most successful sporting club’.

This evolving culture was reflected upon at today’s launch, Hawthorn president Andrew Newbold, chief executive Stuart Fox, senior coach Alastair Clarkson and captain Luke Hodge joined Gordon for a panel discussion about the past five years, hosted by former club great, Peter Knights. Clarkson reflected on the club’s abillity to work through adversity to achieve premiership success saying: ‘I’m enormously proud that when we do things, we do things together....This club has been very fortunate to have some great people behind it.’

Playing to Win is based on unparalleled access and frank interviews with all the key figures at Hawthorn, including Clarkson, Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Jarryd Roughhead and many more players and coaches. It reveals how the ‘Kennett curse’ was overcome; how former president Jeff Kennett considered dropping the coach to the VFL in 2010; and the coach's formula for transforming his players when they crossed 'the white line' in the 2013 preliminary final against Geelong.

From an unexpected flag in 2008 to redemption in 2013, Playing to Win captures the memorable moments that have enriched this club’s already colourful history—a history that began with the Hawks as the perennial easy-beats of the competition.

Michael Gordon is political editor at The Age and has written biographies of surfer Layne Beachley and former prime minister Paul Keating, a history of Bells Beach, and (with his father Harry Gordon) One for All, the story of the Hawthorn Football Club. A Walkley Award winner, he has also won the Graham Perkin Award for Australian Journalist of the Year (in 2005).

Congratulations Dani Valent!

Congratulations to Dani Valent, the Australian winner at the 2013 Gourmand World Cookbooks Awards. Dani’s book In the Mix 2 has qualified for Best Corporate Cookbook.

She goes onto compete against winners in the same category for the title of The Best in the World.

The results will be announced on May 20-21, 2014 at the annual Awards event in Beijing, during the first ‘Beijing Cookbook Fair’, May 19-21, 2014.
